Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 at Long Beach in CA. DuVernay was introduced to art from the aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse who worked night shifts so that she could devote her day to art literature and theatre. DuVernay quickly became enthralled when she showed her that 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through her example that art could be a vehicle for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her life, but spent every summer in the company of her extended family members living in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father recalled the protests for civil rights that took place across the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Selma and decided to make a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles to earn degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become interested in production for television journalism. She began as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson Trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the trash belonging to one of the juries. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied which is why, when she decided to not pursue the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a new publicist at a studio. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
